Those that took the Plato class, those interested in Continental philosophy, political philosophy, or people just generally interested in philosophy will be excited about this upcoming event:
I have a DVD of a few panel discussions from a conference held at York University in 1978. The discussions are amusing and incredibly interesting. I thought we would start with a panel on ‘Reading the Republic’. There are some very heavy hitters on the panel – Eric Voegelin, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Allen Bloom, and Frederick Lawrence (a prof of mine at BC).
The panel discussion is 2 hours, and I thought we would want an hour or so to discuss it. So that is a longer event than usual. I suppose we could break it up, but the discussion holds together best in one viewing I think.
Please post suggestions about the day of the week that is most convenient for a longer philosophy event, as well as the time. 4-7pm? 3-6? 6-9? I suppose we could order a pizza. … A week or so into the semester I will schedule it. If there is interest, we could schedule the other 2 things on the DVD (an hour-long lecture by Voegelin on the ‘Structures of Consciousness’ and another panel discussion on reading and criticism).
USUPhilosophy 
Good idea, though I think I’m a bit confused. Are we watching the panel concerning our topic or simply creating one our own from scratch, or watching a panel then following its example etc.
I might have to get back with Dan about this, but we still will probably be holding our Elitist Book Club meetings (free plug: Join the Elitist Book Club with Dan and I! Great reading, conversation and laughs over the utter confusion and inferiority of the unwashed masses. This semester we will be tackling John Milton’s epic Paradise Lost)
around the same time on late Thursday nights. I have obligations from 5 to 630 otherwise that evening, but I believe a friday afternoon or evening event would be well within reach, though I don’t work so that might be the issue with others. I also think the Religious Studies and Shaft clubs hold their events on weednesday nights?
I’ll be glad to ante up for food money.
I realize I didn’t read the section well enough, so I’ve answered my own question. I definetaly agree that whole viewings are best, and two hours are pretty manageable for the viewing.

We will be watching a video of a panel discussion with the very distinguished philosophers I mention above. After that, we’ll have an open discussion (no particular format) about it. There will be plenty for us to talk about, especially for those who took the Republic course. There is some God-talk in the panel discussion, so RELS folk might be interested.
So from Will I think we have a vote for 7-10pm or so, any evening when we don’t conflict with competing events or Friday late afternoon/evening.

I just remeberd that I have a night class on monday that starts at 8. So any other night would work for me. But if I am out numbered thats fine.
