Some years have passed since we made the “Philosophy: Think about it” t-shirts. We figure it might be time for a new batch of T-shirts, and we’d like some broader input on two matters. First, let’s consider whether we should have T-shirts at all. Some have expressed the worry that it cheapens the degree, or might induce people into the Philosophy major who really don’t belong there. More substantive comments on this issue are welcome, but let’s have a poll:
Next, supposing we were to go with T-shirts, what should they say? Ideas?

My idea, which is getting very mixed reviews, is to have on the front “Ancient questions, new answers” and on the back “New questions, modern answers.”

I thought it was “Ancient questions, modern answers” and “modern questions, ancient answers”.

Ancient questions, new answers, and New questions, ancient answers. One complaint was “modern” might be taken to refer to the historical period.

Another idea that’s been suggested is something relating to bowling, like “Rolling for truth.”

Another route is famous quotations. I always like this as a statement of what philosophy does for a man:
“I have gained this from philosophy: that I do without being commanded what others do only from fear of the law.” (Aristotle)
