Erica Holberg, a PhD candidate at the University of Chicago, will present a lecture entitled “Pleasure, Action, and Ethical Theory” on this coming Tuesday, February 22nd, 4:30-5:30, in Main 207. All are welcome to attend. Also, as Ms. Holberg is a candidate for our position in ethics, feel free to drop in during these times that have been set aside for discussion: Tuesday, 11-12, and Wednesday, 11-11:30, in the department’s large conference room, found through Main 204.

Charlie Kurth (PhD, University of California, San Diego) will be presenting a lecture, “Fashion Models and Moral Realists“, on Thursday, February 17th (tomorrow!), 4:30-5:30, in Main 207. All are welcome to attend; no word yet which members of our faculty will be walking the runway. Also, as Dr. Kurth is a finalist for our position in ethics, he will be available for informal chats at these times: Thursday, 9:30-10:30, and Friday, 11-12, in the department’s large conference room (found through Main 204).

Philosophy major Carson Bessinger just had a paper accepted into Pacific University’s undergraduate philosophy conference (more details here). I believe this will be Carson’s second conference presentation. I’ve read his paper, “Aletheia and Qualia,” and I think it’s very good, even with all the Heidegger stuff in it.

“I’m afraid that I cannot recommend the submission ‘Euthyphro, or On piety’ for publication in the Athenian Journal of the Pursuit of Wisdom. I come to this view despite the fact that there are lots of things to like about the submission. For example, there is a neat point here about the possible difficulties in relating ‘what is pious’ to ‘what the gods love’. However, even here at its best the submission is ultimately disappointing…..” Read the rest here.
