Religion, Culture, Politics
Not a philosophy post (sorry, Huenemann, to religify our blog), but of interest to those interested in religion and culture:
As a former Anglican (Episcopalian) and now Catholic, the recent Papal invitation to Anglicans to convert has been of considerable interest. It appears some, and perhaps many, will take the Pope up on his offer (the Archbishop of Westminster has already expressed his interest). There are lots of things at work here, and this article in the Times does a nice job of sorting some of them out.
Atheism-Theism debate
SHAFT will be showing a new documentary called Collision this Wednesday (Oct 28th) in the Engineering Building, room 302 at 5pm. The documentary follows noted blowhard errrr public intellectual and atheist Christopher Hitchens and his foil Douglas Wilson (a theist) as the two travel around the country debating the atheism/theism.
All are welcome to attend. Visit the SHAFT page for more info and for a preview clip.
Just war and the use of drones
The Social Ethics class is currently discussing just war (first when and if wars are just, now looking at justice within war). Here is an interesting interview about our increased reliance on drones. Those in the Social Ethics course will recognize several issues we have been discussing in class (double effect, what counts as a legit target, etc etc).
Thoughts?
Intermountain Philosophy Conference
For more details, look at the ANNOUNCEMENTS box on the right.
Students — you are strongly encouraged to attend. The topics of the papers are quite varied, and there probably is something that will interest you. This conference is very informal, aimed primarily at helping philosophers in the general area to get to know one another. So show up, get stimulated, and get involved in some philosophical discussion.
Plus, free drinks and cookies.
