Massimo Pigliucci made what I thought was the most succinct non-illustrated criticism of the title of the Brooks piece:
It apparently didn’t occur to Brooks that perhaps philosophy started out as a reaction to the then prevalent reliance on gut feelings in matters of ethics, and to the violence and injustice that it was bringing to the human lot.
